Aspect Ratio Print Size Chart: Guide for Banner Printing

Aspect ratio print size chart showing common aspect ratios and print sizes for stage banners

The width-to-height ratio of an image is its aspect ratio, expressed as a two-number formula.

For example, 1:1, 4:5, and 2:3 are common aspect ratios for stage scrims and backdrops.

In banner printing, you need to use the right aspect ratio for a visually balanced design that makes an impact, whether displaying your large banner in a packed outdoor festival or a pair of small stage scrims in a bar.

Keep reading to discover the ideal aspect ratio for your banner printing needs. I’ll share a free, downloadable chart showing common aspect ratios and print sizes, based on our experience printing hundreds of band backdrops and scrims over the years.

Different banners call for varying aspect ratios. Use the chart below, which includes print sizes in feet and inches, to know the ideal aspect ratio and convention banner size for your event, whether you’re using AI for banner print design or Canva for printed banners.

Ideal Banner Sizes

Many bands have shared with us these banner dimensions as excellent options:

  • 1:1 (6’ x 6’) stage scrims are small enough to set up and tear down if your band plays at smaller venues. Go for 8’ x 8’ scrims if you want something a little bigger to display your logo.
  • 4:5 (8’ x 10’) is perfect for venues with 150+ people, effectively showcasing your band name, logo, art, or photo to elevate your presence.
  • 2: 3 (10’ x 15’) will undoubtedly draw attention at a crowded event with 400+ people.
  • I recommend 3:4 (15’ x 20’) and 4:5 (20’ x 25’) or bigger sizes for eye-catching festival banners and band backdrops that make an impact at spacious, outdoor venues and large clubs.

The Best Scrims and Backdrop Combinations

If you’re looking for the perfect mix, here are the backdrop and stage scrim combinations that work best for most of our customers:

  • Two 6’ x 6’ Stage Scrims and One 10’ x 15’ Backdrop
  • Two 10’ x 3’ Scrims and One 8’ x 10’ Backdrop
  • Two 5’ x 8’ Scrims, Two 15’ x 8’ Scrims, and One 15’ x 25’ Backdrop
  • Two 7’ x 3’ Scrims and One 10’ x 15’ Backdrop

Quick Tips for Choosing the Right Banner Aspect Ratio and Size

Whether you’re printing a design for your tattoo convention banner or band backdrop, keep these tips in mind to determine the right banner aspect ratio and print size:

  • Find out the width of the stage. You don’t want a stage backdrop that’s too wide or too small. If you play at multiple venues, calculate the average banner size that fits well at different shows.
  • Consider visibility. Small scrims and backdrops work great for close-up viewing, whereas large banners stand out at a distance.
  • Determine the aspect ratio before creating a digital design to ensure your design perfectly fits the banner and avoid distorted artwork or disproportionately cropped images. Stick to the same aspect ratio when resizing your banner.

Pro Tip: Use vector graphics (PDF, EPS, and AI files), which are made with mathematical formulas instead of individual pixels, to resize your banner without losing quality and clarity. If you’re working with photos, ensure they’re high-resolution. Nothing screams cheap quality more than a fuzzy, pixelated banner design!

Choose the Perfect Size for Your Banners

Start planning your custom banners today using the aspect ratio print size chart above to ensure your design fits perfectly.

Because the only thing that should be oversized at your show is the crowd’s enthusiasm (and the band members’ confidence, of course).
