Vinyl Banner Thickness and Weight Chart Made Simple

vinyl banner thickness and weight chart

The most common vinyl banner weights are 10 oz (10 to 12 mils thick), 13 oz (13 to 15 mils thick), 15 oz (15 to 17 mils thick), and 18 oz (18 to 22 mils thick).

Use my banner chart to simplify your decision-making. I’ll also discuss why vinyl weight matters and the ideal uses for different vinyl weights to help you determine the best option for your event.

Vinyl Banner Thickness and Weight Chart

Here are the most common vinyl banner weights, thicknesses, and dimensions:

The standard measurements for vinyl banners are:

  • Vinyl banner weight: ounces per square yard (For example, a 13-oz banner weighs 13 ounces per square yard.)
  • Vinyl banner thickness: mil (unit of thickness equivalent to one thousandth of an inch)

Why Vinyl Weight Matters

illustration comparing lighter vinyl banners vs heavier vinyl banners

Weight directly impacts a vinyl banner’s durability, strength, ease of transport and installation, and overall lifespan.

Durability

The thicker and heavier the vinyl, the tougher it is against the elements, especially in outdoor settings. Thicker vinyl also often lasts long outside, depending on weather exposure and maintenance.

Ease of Transport and Installation

Lighter vinyl is easier to handle, and it’s a cheaper choice for short-term displays.

For example, small-to-medium banners like 8′ x 8′ and 8′ x 10′ weigh no more than 10 lbs. This means they’re simple to hang without worrying about the weight.

On the other hand, large banners like 20′ x 40′ can be heavier than 40 lbs. You’ll have to plan ahead on how to move and mount them safely.

Lifespan

Lighter banners degrade faster outdoors, whereas heavier banners resist wear and tear, even in high-traffic and sun-exposed areas. Also, graphics look vibrant for a long time on thicker, sturdier banners.

Vinyl banners can last years with proper care, but their lifespan depends heavily on weather exposure, proper installation, and care.

Here’s a quick comparison:

Best Uses for Different Vinyl Banner Weights

Many printers offer vinyl banners in the following standard weights:

10 Ounces (10 to 12 Mil Thick)

Lightweight and affordable, 10-oz small vinyl banners work well in retractable banner stands for up-close viewing.

Best Uses:

  • Indoor events, like trade shows, conventions, seminars, and sales events
  • Short-term outdoor use in shaded, non-windy areas

13 Ounces (13 to 15 Mil Thick)

13-oz vinyl banners are a crowd favorite as they are durable, economical, and long-lasting. They’re the best option for most indoor and outdoor events.

They handle the elements without being too bulky, and they’re easy to hang on walls and fences or install with grommets.

At NorthCoast Banners, our standard solid vinyl banner is 13 oz, which is perfect for various indoor and outdoor applications. All our vinyl banner weights include grommets every 2 feet and hems on all sides.

Best Uses:

  • Business promotions, trade shows, real estate signs, parades, and storefront signage
  • Limited outdoor use in moderate weather and wind conditions

15 Ounces (15 to 17 Mil Thick)

Designed for heavy-duty use, 15-oz vinyl banners are strong enough to withstand rough environments.

Best Uses:

  • Outdoor applications where durability matters, like music festivals, construction sites, and building wraps
  • Long-term outdoor use, even in windy or rainy weather

18 Ounces (18 to 22 Mil Thick)

18-oz vinyl banners are extra sturdy, perfect for extended outdoor displays. They hold up well against prolonged exposure to sun, rain, and wind.

18 oz vinyls are thick enough to be used as block out banners – if you need the light to not pass through the banner, this is the banner thickness for you.

Best Uses:

  • Large-scale promotions, sporting events, fence wraps, street poles, highway banners, and storefront banners
  • Ultra-durable for long-term outdoor advertising
  • Great for double-sided printing
  • Block out Banners

Pro Tip: For outdoor promotions in windy, open areas, I recommend vinyl mesh (70/30 or 30/70 weave) as it features tiny holes for excellent wind and tear resistance. Sound passes through this material blend easily, making it perfect for outdoor shows and events.
