How to Set Up a Feather Flag in 5 Steps

From promoting limited-time offers outside your store to highlighting sponsorships, feather flags are standout advertising tools that capture people’s attention.
Follow this complete tutorial to assemble and install your feather flag for indoor or outdoor display:
Step 1: Arrange all parts neatly on a flat area.
Take all the banner parts out of the box and place them side by side on the ground, table, or any flat surface.
Familiarize yourself with the parts. If you’re installing your feather flag outdoors on soil, sand, or grass, you need a ground stake for firm stability.
Our standard flags at NorthCoast Banners come with:
- Sturdy poles made with aluminum and graphite for outstanding durability. They use an interlocking design for quick, no-tool installation.
- Ground stakes that feature a ball-bearing system for better feather flag wind resistance, allowing the flags to swivel freely to reduce the risk of damage.

If you’re setting up your feather flag on concrete or other hard surfaces, you’ll need either a cross base or a square base.
We provide installation upgrades, including a 6.5-lb aluminum cross base or a 20-lb steel square base, to ensure your banner remains steady. We also offer an optional water bag for added weight and stability.
Step 2: Connect the poles.
Attach the poles carefully one by one. Insert the slimmer pole into the thicker one. Make sure the thickest pole is at the base and the thinnest one is at the top of the flag.
Step 3: Slide the pole into the flag sleeve.
Spread the flag on the ground. Next, slide the narrow end of the pole into the feather flag’s pocket until the thickest part of the pole reaches the bottom of the flag.
Remember: Push the pole slowly and carefully to avoid puncturing or tearing the feather flag material.
Step 4: Install the base and secure your banner.
If you chose a spike base:
- Hammer your ground stake into the soil, sand, or grass. Make sure you hammer the actual spike and not the peg that connects the base to the feather flag.
If you chose a cross or square base:
- Spread out the four legs evenly.
- Place the bottom of the flagpole onto the peg that’s attached to the cross base.
- If you’re using a water bag, fill it with enough water and put it atop the base before connecting the flagpole to the base.
After setting up the base, secure your banner by attaching the bungee cord to the pole. Tighten the cord until your banner is fully taut.
Step 5: Find a high-traffic area.
The best spot for your feather flags is a bustling area where people will see them easily, such as near your storefront entrance, beside a trade show booth, in a parking lot, or along a sidewalk.
And that’s it! Whether you’re installing a double-sided or single-sided feather flag, it now stands stunningly, ready to advertise your business or event 24/7.
Check your feather flag once in awhile to make sure it remains stable, especially when displayed in windy areas.
How Long Do Feather Flags Last?
From years of printing and supplying feather flags for businesses across the U.S., we’ve found that the lifespan of feather flags depends on weather exposure, material quality, setup, and maintenance.
They usually last:
- 3 to 9 months with continuous outdoor use in windy and sunny areas.
- 6 to 12 months with outdoor placement in calmer environments.
- 1 to 2 years or longer with indoor placement and proper care.
Pro Tip: Choose a strategic location with minimal exposure to harsh weather to prolong the lifespan of your banners. It’s best to remove them during heavy rains or hurricanes, especially when they’re placed in exposed, open areas.
Choose the Right Flag Size and Shape
Along with learning how to set up a feather flag, you must choose the right banner size and shape, which impact readability, visibility, and performance.
For example, flags that are around 6 to 8 feet tall are ideal for close-up viewing, whereas taller flags up to 10+ feet high are best for roadside promotions and bigger outdoor spaces.
We offer a variety of sizes to fit your marketing goals, and we also print double-sided feather flags. Get in touch today and our banner specialists will help you make the right choice for your event!
