What Is a Mesh Banner?

A mesh banner is outdoor signage printed on woven vinyl with small, evenly spaced holes. The holes let wind and sound flow through instead of pulling at the banner and its rigging, which makes mesh the standard material for stage banners, festival signage, fence wraps, and any large outdoor display. From a few feet away the holes are invisible – your eye fills in the gaps and sees one solid printed image.

Mesh is lightweight (about one pound per 15 square feet), UV- and weather-resistant, and with proper care a mesh banner lasts up to five years. All of our mesh is fire-retardant to NFPA 701, the National Fire Protection Association standard most venues require.

70/30 vs 30/70 Mesh: Which Should You Choose?

Vinyl mesh comes in two weaves, named for the ratio of material to holes:

• 70/30 mesh – 70% material, 30% holes. This is what about 90% of our customers choose, and what we print for 95% of festival stage scrims and backdrops. It’s the best balance for nearly every situation: the graphics read clean and solid from a few feet away, while air and sound still pass through without a billowing sail effect. A 15′ x 20′ banner weighs just 19.5 lbs.
• 30/70 mesh – 30% material, 70% holes. Built for very high-wind locations: beaches, open coastlines, notoriously windy venues. It allows maximum blowthrough, but only 30% of every square foot is printed graphic, so art looks noticeably more muted – especially backlit or in bright sun. Choose it when wind safety outweighs vibrancy, and keep the design bold and simple.

Rule of thumb: 70/30 unless you know the venue is seriously windy. A stage always has a maximum wind load – if you expect high winds, 30/70 is the safest choice for the stage and everyone in front of it. Not sure? Tell us the venue and we’ll recommend the weave.

To estimate any banner’s weight: surface area in square feet × 0.065 = weight in pounds. A 10′ x 10′ mesh banner weighs about 6.5 lbs.

Stage and Festival Mesh Banners

Stage banners are what we print all day, every day. Mesh matters most here: a solid banner on a mobile stage catches wind, adds load, and raises the real risk of stage collapse. Mesh backdrops, scrims, and headers let wind and sound through – you can hang a scrim directly in front of the PA and the mix comes through clean.

If you’re ordering for a mobile stage, size by the stage model. Common Stageline and Apex specs we print for:

• Stageline SL 100 – backdrop 12′8″ x 23′6″; scrims 16′ x 6′; header 3′10″ x 24′ (or 37′)
• Stageline SL 250 – backdrop 14′ x 30′; scrims 17′9″ x 12′; header 12′6″ x 30′8″ (or 32′8″)
• Stageline SL 260 – backdrop 17′6″ x 30′10″; scrims 20′6″ x 13′; header 5′1″ x 46′3″ (or 35′)
• Stageline SL 320 – backdrop 22′4″ x 38′; scrims 26′4″ x 15′10″; header 4′ x 40′
• Apex 2016 / 2024 / 3224 – backdrops 11′6″ x 20′ up to 16′ x 32′; scrims 16′ x 4′ up to 19′9″ x 4′; headers 3′ high (our Apex rep confirms 3′ beats the spec book’s 4′)

How Large Can You Print a Mesh Banner?

Any size. Our printers are 16 feet wide – the largest in the industry – so we print up to 16′ with no seam at all. Beyond that, we join panels with a butt seam sealed for strength; on white and light backgrounds a seam is barely visible, and we’ll place seams around your design. Building wraps, oversized fence runs, 20′ x 25′ stage backdrops – whatever the dimensions, we can print it.

Mesh Banner Finishing Options

• Hems & grommets – our standard: heat-welded hems with grommets every 2 feet on all four sides. Hang with zip ties, cable, rope, or hooks.
• Reinforced 1″ hems – doubled-up welds or stitching for outdoor stage banners and high-wind installs. Standard hems can tear in high winds; reinforced hems hold.
• Pole pockets – sewn top and/or bottom; tell us your pole diameter and we hem the pocket to fit. Most useful on side banners and for weighing down a bottom edge.
• Wind slits and welded edges – available on request for specific installs.

Designing Artwork for a Mesh Banner

Two things make stage and mesh banner artwork work: bright colors and high contrast. Mesh softens fine detail, so bold, simple graphics with large readable text beat intricate designs – especially on 30/70.

Vector files (PDF, AI, EPS) are best because they scale to any size with no quality loss. Raster files (JPEG, PNG, PSD) need to be 150 dpi at full print size – or half size at 300 dpi for very large prints. Mesh Banner FAQ

Are mesh banners fire resistant?

Yes. All our mesh meets NFPA 701 flammability guidelines – the standard venues and fire marshals ask for.

How long do mesh banners last?

Up to five years with proper care. Roll your banner for storage instead of folding it, and skip printed dates on the artwork if you plan to reuse it season to season.

How much does a mesh banner weigh?

Square footage × 0.065 = pounds. A 10′ x 10′ weighs about 6.5 lbs; a 15′ x 20′ about 19.5 lbs.

Can I print both sides?

Double-sided mesh is possible, and some customers choose it for building wraps and speaker scrims for extra vibrancy. Because mesh is semi-transparent, both sides must carry the same image.

Will my banner rip in the wind?

Mesh is engineered not to. The evenly spaced holes release wind without tension points, and reinforced hems keep edges strong in sustained high winds – that combination is exactly why mesh replaced solid vinyl outdoors.

Does a mesh banner block sound?

No – air and sound pass through, which is why scrims can hang directly in front of speakers. For maximum acoustic transparency, choose 30/70.

What’s the turnaround time?

Typically 5–7 business days plus shipping, and we can often rush-print as fast as next day for a fee. Artwork issues are the most common delay, so send files early – for events, order at least three weeks out to be safe.

Can I cut my banner to a custom shape?

Don’t – cutting removes the hemmed edges that stop tearing. If you want a shape, talk to our designers; we can usually print the effect you’re after instead.
